Time for a Wine & Mead Board for Meghalaya

K.N. KUMAR

Meghalaya is blessed with an extraordinary abundance of diverse fruits. Most of these are unique to the state of Meghalaya ranging from Peaches, Plums, Pears, Sohmon, Sohiong, Strawberries, etc. Unfortunately, these are perishable even before it hits the market and this causes huge food loss. But if an ecosystem facilitating wine making industry were to be set up, we can avoid such food loss. With this in mind, the state Government legalized the manufacturing and sale of Homemade fruit wine in September 2020. However, to make this policy more impactful we must take further steps and establish a Meghalaya Wine Board to help our farmers and entrepreneurs. The Meghalaya (Empowerment) Farmers’ Commission has also stepped in and taken up the responsibility to organize a week-long exposure visit with 28 current/potential wine entrepreneurs of Meghalaya to Nashik and gave them the necessary network of service providers, and deep exposure to the intricacies of the wine industry of the country.
