Meghalaya Cabinet gives nod for Farmers’ Commission

SHILLLONG: State Cabinet on Thursday approved the constitution of the Meghalaya Farmers’ Empowerment Commission .

Talking to newsmen after the meeting, Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong said that the idea for the constitution of the Commission was mooted during the first ever farmers’ parliament which was held in the state last year.

The farmers in the parliament also wanted the Meghalaya Government to declare 2019 as a year of farmers.

However , Tynsong said that the Government will try to declared the year 2020 as a year of farmers adding that the terms of reference for the Commission will be made shortly .

The Commission will act as a platform for farmers to submit their papers and programmes besides it would also have discussions with experts on the subject of agriculture.

Stating that rules will be in place for the Commission shortly, he added that most of the members of the Commission will be experts and farmers.
