26th January 2021
Hailing from Gonda Jasingre Village, Tikrikilla West Garo Hills, Shri. Nanandro B Marak received the Padma Shri 2021 from Honourable President of India Shri Ram Nath Kovind in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other top dignitaries on the 9th November 2021. Shri. Nanandro has been growing black pepper on his farm for 30 years since 1986. Right from soil levelling, seed quality, mulching, composting to timely harvesting of crops, he has figured out what works for his farm. He grows pepper alongside his areca nut plantation. Even though organic farming was hard at the beginning he stuck with his eco-friendly methods and avoided the usage of chemicals on his farm. Now he yields 3.2 kgs per tree which is 3 times higher than other farmers in the state. His success has influenced several other farmers to learn his organic farming methods. They often come to him for advice & training. He also takes training sessions across the district for those who are unable to visit his farm. Together with the help of other farmers who support him, they've trained close to 800 farmers across 18 villages To read more: https://bit.ly/3n2raIo
