Inducting zero energy cool chambers in Meghalaya

K.N. KUMAR

Zero Energy Cool Chambers (ZECC) is a low-cost technology that has been developed by the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi. It was further customized by Assam Agriculture University, Jorhat. ZECC is an environmentally sustainable model as it can be built using locally available construction materials. Studies indicate that potatoes can be stored for 90 days in a ZECC whereas at room temperature they can only be stored for 46 days. Such an extension of storage time especially during fluctuating market sales can help ease a farmer's distress. In keeping with its mandate of technology induction and to introduce ZECC to farmers in the state, the Meghalaya Farmers' (Empowerment) Commission is providing 100 such ZECCs to farmers of West Khasi Hills through a pilot project being implemented through the KVK, Nongshillong, West Khasi Hills district.
